Live-looped musical comedy ‘Off the Rails’ to open at A Play, A Pie and A Pint this April
A live-looped musical comedy about how far one woman will go to escape her demons… and which ScotRail service will get her there the fastest.
Kicking off an exciting new co-presentation between A Play, A Pie and A Pint and Assembly Roxy this Spring, Off the Rails by Stephanie MacGaraidh invites Glasgow and Edinburgh audiences to a witty and uplifting solo musical comedy.
Maggie has had enough. As her childhood nemesis appears at her door on her 30th birthday, she impulsively sets off on a run-away journey to Norway via the Aberdeen train in search of freedom – armed with nothing but her phone and a stale Go Ahead bar.
As Maggie tries to run away from painful childhood memories (which have blossomed into a painful adult life), her spontaneous escape becomes a journey of self-discovery through encounters with a tipsy hen-do, a Very Hot Man, and a recent widower who might just have the answers she needs.
Featuring original songs, a loop station, and a host of colourful characters brought to life live on stage by Stephanie MacGaraidh herself, through guitar, keyboard and vocals, Off the Rails is a comedic and heartfelt exploration of an unconventional quarter-life crisis, about directions, detours, and what it really takes to finally get your life on track.
Off the Rails marks MacGaraidh’s professional writing debut, whose recent credits as a performer include Laila Noble’s Flick & Pie Go Fishing (A Play, A Pie and A Pint), Twelfth Night (Folksy Theatre) and Pinocchio (Lanternhouse Theatre.
The production is directed by Scottish director Katie Slater (The Haunting of Agnes Gilfrey, A Play, A Pie and A Pint; Mary: A Gig Theatre Show, Traverse Theatre, Emma Ruse Productions & Knot Tied Theatre), with set and costume design by Heather Grace Currie.
Speaking about the production, MacGaraidh said: ‘Being someone who lives alone and frequently talks to herself, it’s been such a privilege to get paid for that existence, and Off The Rails is the result of many caffeine-fuelled conversations with imaginary castmates. As fun and wild as that process has been, I can’t wait to get it into a room and finally share the madness with other people! I’m so honoured to have my professional writing debut in the hands of PPP, and am beyond excited to be sharing the season with so many incredible performers and creators.’
Off the Rails runs at Òran Mór, Glasgow from Mon 20 – Sat 25 April 2026, before heading to Assembly Roxy, Edinburgh from Wed 29 April – Sun 3 May 2026, as the first co-presentation between A Play, A Pie and A Pint and Assembly Roxy, supported by Creative Scotland.
