REVIEW: Uncanny: Fear of the Dark – King’s Theatre, Glasgow

Danny Robins of Uncanny a man with black hair in a red anorak against a green background Uncanny fear of the dark ghostly figure in background

From what started as a podcast (now in its fifth series), has spawned two stage shows and two series on BBC TV, Danny Robins creation Uncanny has been an unmitigated success. The spooky spine-tingler has arrived in Glasgow for two dates to explore some new stories of the supernatural.

There’s a tangible tension in the air, a tension that’s ramped up by trickles of dry ice creeping across the stage before curtain up. There’s an ear-splitting cacophony of pounding music and our hero in a red anorak appears centre stage

Fans will be delighted to know that the stage show follows the format of the podcast.  A series of cases are laid out before our panel of resident experts, host Robins and the familiar duo of sceptic Dr. Ciarán O’Keefe and paranormal believer, writer and parapsychologist Evelyn Hollow. Like the podcast, the merits of each case are debated, but unlike the podcast, the cases are staged, with testimony from the witnesses and some impressive, accompanying special effects. The usual “paranormal rap battle” ensues with some contributions from the audience. As ever, in the Uncanny family , it is a a supportive community where every view, be it sceptic or believer, is treated with equal respect.

The cases run the paranormal gamut from poltergeists and cryptids to UFOs, and while arguably the cases are less spooky than the previous stage show, they are varied enough and well enough told to keep the interest high.

The greatest asset the show has is writer, creator and host Robins, whose warmth, charm and natural storytelling skills have the audience in the palm of his hand, he has the ability to engage and enthral in equal measure.

With a sixth series of the podcast promised, the reaction of this audience alone will ensure it is as resounding a success as every previous incarnation of this irresistible show.
