Scottish folklore horror Badhbh-Shith and The Storytellers to premiere at A Play, A Pie and A Pint

You never know who might be lurking in a bothy…

This year’s A Play, A Pie and A Pint Halloween Special is a new folk horror from writer and performer Kenny Boyle that tells some of the most enduring tales from Scottish folklore, whilst weaving one of its own.

Badhbh-Shith and The Storytellers sees Sorcha and Evander take shelter in a bothy when a mighty Hebridean storm descends down upon them. They decide to tell each other grim stories to pass the time, but bothies are unusual places…you never know who else be there.

Boyle will star in the show alongside MJ Deans, who performed in Boyle’s last horror hit Righ Iasgair: The Fisher King (★★★★ The Stage) that premiered last October and was based on folklore from the Isle of Lewis.

Badhbh-Shith and The Storytellers will be directed by Ben Harrison, Artistic Director at Edinburgh’s award-winning Grid Iron Theatre Company, who directed their acclaimed site-specific adaptation of Andrew Hagan’s Mayflies at this year’s Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

As well as performing and directing, Kenny Boyle has also become a prominent influencer who talks about Scottish folklore to over 700,000 followers, for which he was named Scottish Culture Influencer of The Year 2026.

Badhbh-Shith and The Storytellers will run at Glasgow’s Oran Mor from Mon 26 – Sat 31 Oct, with tickets selling fast.

“Halloween evolved from Samhainn, and Scotland is one of the Celtic countries where Samhainn was born. Telling scary stories, in the dark, around a fire (or in this case dramatic stage lighting) is woven into the bones of Scotland. With Badhbh Shìth and the storytellers I want to keep the tradition of folk horror stories alive. If one person hears a tale we tell during this run and goes on to tell it to another person then our spoken-word folklore lives on.”
