NEWS: CASTING ANNOUNCED FOR CITIZENS THEATRE PRODUCTION OF PINOCCHIO

The Citizens Theatre has unveiled the cast for its production of Pinocchio, written by Robert Alan Evans and adapted with Lu Kemp, based on the original and much-loved story by Carlo Collodi.

Audiences can expect the same distinctive style that has earned the theatre a reputation for unique and alternative Christmas shows with inventive storytelling, atmospheric set design and live music.

Returning to the Citizens stage for another festive season are Andy Clark and Irene Allan. Andy Clark has regularly performed at the theatre since Vernon God Little in 2004. Andy recently appeared at the Citizens in the 2017 studio show Lampedusa and in the 2018 festive revival of A Christmas Carol. Clark’s past credits at the theatre also include The Libertine, Othello, The Bevellers, Peter Pan and Hamlet.

Irene Allan’s performance as the Witch in Hansel & Gretel (2016) was described by the Daily Record as “utterly fabulous”. Audiences may also remember Allan from her role as Cinderella’s Stepmother in the theatre’s 2017 festive production.

As part of the theatre’s commitment to nurturing new talent, the Citizens Actor Intern, Liam King, will star as Pinocchio.  Having recently graduated from The London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, Liam’s internship is funded by the Robertson Trust.

Also returning to the Citizens is Elisa De Grey, who appeared in A Christmas Carol (2018) and starred as Tinkerbell in Peter Pan at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre last summer.

Taking on the role of Gepetto is Gary Lilburn who will be familiar to many as Sharon’s dad, Des, in the hit Channel 4 series Catastrophe.  Gary has also appeared in Silent Witness, Casualty, Mrs Brown’s Boys (all BBC) and on stage in As You Like It (Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre), The Taming of the Shrew (Shakespeare’s Globe) and at the Citizens Theatre in 2013 in Dr Faustus.

Making their Citizens debuts are Helen Katamba (The Ugly One, Tron Theatre Company; Macbeth, National Theatre; The Three Musketeers, The Dukes) and Stephanie Payne, who has recently graduated from The London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art and is the Citizens’ second Actor Intern this season.

Directed by Artistic Director Dominic Hill, this new Christmas production reunites the talented creative team behind the Citizens’ festive productions of A Christmas Carol and Hansel and Gretel.  Designer Rachael Canning and Lighting Designer Lizzie Powell will bring the stage to life whilst an immersive soundscape will be created by Hill’s regular collaborator Nikola Kodjabashia and performed live on stage by the company.

As well as previous Christmas shows A Christmas Carol, Cinderella and Hansel and Gretel, Kodjabashia has lent his distinctive style to Hill’s productions of Cyrano de Bergerac, This Restless House, Hamlet and Crime and Punishment in recent years.

Family tickets for Pinocchio start from just £39 and a range of concessions are available.

FESTIVE SEASON: PACE Announces The Snow Queen: Paisley’s Family Panto That’s Cool As Can Be

This Christmas, PACE Theatre Company is delighted to announce its annual pantomime will be The Snow Queen. A festive treat for adults and children alike, this icy tale of a queen who is up to snow good will run from 27 November to 31 December, featuring hilarious characters, fantastic original music and a supporting chorus of young actors.

CHRIS ALEXANDER (Martha and White, Catherine Wheels) will reprise his role as dame, Widow Swanky, having proved a hit with audiences since his debut performance in 2017’s PACE panto (Jack and the Beanstalk and Snow White). He’ll appear alongside a stellar ensemble cast including: DUNCAN BROWN (Mammy Goose, Tron; Chick Whittington, macrobert), SARAH MCCARDIE (River City; Cinderella, Motherwell Theatre), SHANNON SWAN (Glasgow Girls; Outlander) and KARA SWINNEY (Sunshine on Leith, tour).

PACE is pleased to welcome ANDY MCGREGOR as writer and director. Andy is a playwright, director and composer who has been making a name for himself creating work for family audiences, and in particular Christmas shows for venues such as the Citizens Theatre and macrobert arts centre.

The Snow Queen will be produced and musically directed by ALAN ORR, whose comic performances were at the heart of PACE pantos for many years, while regular collaborator FRASER LAPPIN will bring his inimitable flair to the set and costume design.

Alan Orr said, “We’re incredibly proud that the PACE panto has become such an institution for Renfrewshire audiences at Christmas. It’s the perfect opportunity for families and friends to get together and celebrate the festivities. We’ve gathered together a fantastic team to create this year’s panto, and we’re confident that there will be something for everyone to enjoy!”

The cast will be completed by 4 teams of young actors handpicked from PACE’s core youth theatre groups, enhancing the production with their boundless energy.

This year’s schedule will also feature the Company’s first relaxed performance; ideal for anyone who would benefit from a more relaxed performance environment, including those with an Autistic Spectrum Condition, sensory and communication disorders, or a learning disability. During the performance the lights in the theatre will be dimmed so that it’s not too dark, there will be a more relaxed approach to noise and movement from the audience, and we will make small changes to the lights and sound (such as taking out strobes lights) so that the performance is more accessible for anyone with sensory sensitivities.

NEWS: CASTING CONFIRMED FOR QUEEN AND BEN ELTON’S GLOBAL PHENOMENON WE WILL ROCK YOU

Casting has been announced for Queen and Ben Elton’s smash hit musical We Will Rock You, which will storm Theatre Royal, Glasgow this December as part of a UK tour.

Taking on the role of Galileo is Olivier Award nominee Ian McIntosh (Beautiful – The Carole King Musical / The Commitments), who will be joined by Elena Skye (Les Misérables / Kinky Boots) in the role of Scaramouche. Playing Killer Queen is Jenny O’Leary (Heathers The Musical / Rent), with Michael McKell (Macbeth / Blood Brothers) as Buddy. Adam Strong (Jesus Christ Superstar / Rock of Ages) will take on the role of Khashoggi, with David-Michael Johnson (We Will Rock You, Germany / Jesus Christ Superstar) reprising the role of Brit and Amy Di Bartolomeo (Bat Out of Hell / Priscilla Queen of the Desert) playing Oz.

Brian May said: “This is a stunning state-of-the art new-look production of WWRY – but of course the original story is now more relevant than ever. We’re confident WWRY fans will love revisiting the world’s first true Rock Theatrical, and a whole new generation will now discover the VIBE!”

Featuring 24 of Queen’s biggest hits and Ben Elton’s hilarious futuristic comedy writing, We Will Rock You boasts the scale and spectacle that marked the band’s legendary live performances. This global phenomenon will continue to be one of the most spectacular musicals to tour the United Kingdom & Ireland.

The show has seen unprecedented success in theatres and arenas around the world and the nine month tour will see the Rock Theatrical performed in front of thousands of rock fans in Bromley, Ipswich, Sheffield, Edinburgh, Newcastle, Derry, Dublin, Southend, Leeds, Nottingham, Plymouth, Glasgow, Blackpool, Hull, Southampton, Manchester, Aberdeen, Bradford, Canterbury, Oxford, Llandudno, Bristol, Milton Keynes, Liverpool, Cardiff, Birmingham, Norwich, Northampton, Bournemouth, Stoke and Reading.

Since 2002 over 15 million theatregoers in 17 countries have been thrilled by We Will Rock You’s awe-inspiring production showcasing a number of Queen’s finest hits, including We Are The Champions, Radio Ga Ga, I Want To Break Free, Somebody To Love, Killer Queen, Under Pressure, Bohemian Rhapsody, Another One Bites The Dust and, of course, We Will Rock You. Before closing its glorious 12 year run at London’s Dominion Theatre, the show was performed an astonishing 4600 times.

The touring production of We Will Rock You reaches theatres carrying with it an impressive legacy: when it first became news that one of Britain’s most phenomenally successful comedy writers Ben Elton was teaming up with legends of rock, Queen, for a musical there was much speculation on what such a unique collaboration would turn out. So impressed after attending the original workshop, screen icon Robert De Niro and his company Tribeca came on board as American partners. De Niro continues to support the show, even making a special visit to London in 2013 to help celebrate the 10th anniversary in style. The audience erupted with thunderous applause, as he joined the cast on stage after the landmark performance.

The announcement of the We Will Rock You UK & Ireland tour follows the smash hit release of the hugely anticipated Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody. The Oscar nominated film, celebrating the career of one of the greatest ever rock bands has wowed Queen fans all around the world, opening at the number one box office position in over 30 countries.

NEWS: The Overtones announce new band member Jay James and promise ‘best tour yet’ including Royal Concert Hall, Glasgow

Multi-platinum-selling vocal harmony group The Overtones are delighted to announce that Welsh singer & songwriter Jay James has joined the band. The announcement heralds the start of an exciting new era for the group which has had 5 top 10 albums, 9 sold out UK tours and will now embark on a UK tour this December. The band will be in Glasgow on the 11th December.

Tickets for The Overtones Christmas Party are on sale now from gigsandtours.com

We will be performing classic songs from yesteryear, favourites from our albums and plenty of surprises” says Mike Crawshaw. “Over the last 10 years we’ve learnt a thing or two about throwing a Christmas party! People come to our shows to let their hair down, get their spirits up and dance their hearts out. We want everyone to leave an Overtones concert with a huge smile on their face and a spring in their step. This year will be our best tour yet!”

A former Royal Navy serviceman, Jay James had enjoyed a varied recording career working with the likes of Booker T Jones, John Legend, Naughty Boy and the Jonas Brothers (amongst others) before rising to prominence as Simon Cowell’s tip on the X Factor. Since then Jay has continued to record music and perform as well as becoming an established broadcaster.

“We met Jay 9 years ago when we all performed on the charity record (Songs To Save A Life) for The Samaritans, and our paths continuously crossed over the years” explains Darren Everest. “When we thought about a new member joining the band he was the first, and only, name that came to mind. Everything about Jay says ‘Overtone’. He has a classic style and is inspired by the same great artists as we all are. Jay has fitted in seamlessly and we can’t wait to push on and get to work.”

Speaking about joining The Overtones Jay says “I’ve known the boys and been a fan for many years now and it has always been clear what they were all about – making great, timeless music, putting on incredible shows and enjoying life! Over the years that has never changed. I’ve been blessed to support them on a number of occasions, and I’ve witnessed the joy they bring and felt the warmth of some of the best fans I’ve ever met. To now join the group is absolute magic and I cannot wait to stand beside Darren, Mike & Mark in creating some more brilliant nights & continuing to make people smile, sing and dance for many moons to come!

The first song to be recorded with this new line up is Earth Wind & Fire’s ‘September’ “We’ve been busy over the last few months and it’s been so exciting being back in the studio with Jay” says Mark Franks.  “The new music is very much ‘classic Overtones’ but with a twist. This song is a taster of what’s to come, Jay’s voice adds a new dimension as you can hear and, as soon as we recorded it, we knew that it was the perfect fit for us four boys – feel good and uplifting… an absolute gem of a song.”

With their innate charm and adherence to vintage-modernist style, and a devotion to the timeless appeal of male vocal harmonies, The Overtones are a bridge between pre-rock’n’roll classicism and lively 21st Century entertainment. They’ve sold over a million albums, made countless TV appearances and filled venues to capacity on tour after tour, all the while building a relationship with their fans that has real depth and devotion.

In 2018 the group released their sixth album ‘The Overtones’, the accompanying sold-out UK tour took their trademark sense of celebration and party on the road with the group living up to the promise of “a night to remember”. That’s the tradition they come from and they’re certainly not about to stop now.

WHAT’S ON DECEMBER 2019 – Tim Burton’s Nightmare Before Christmas Live In Concert with Danny Elfman

LEGENDARY HOLLYWOOD COMPOSER DANNY ELFMAN BRINGS TIM BURTON’S ICONIC THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS LIVE IN CONCERT TO THE UK FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME.

Multiple award-winning composer, songwriter and reigning Pumpkin King, Danny Elfman will be bringing Disney’s timeless classic, Tim Burton’s “The Nightmare Before Christmas” to life for two very special UK arena shows in December 2019 as part of the movie’s 25th anniversary celebrations.

Elfman, performing his role of Jack Skellington, will be joined by other original cast members Catherine O’Hara as Sally, and Ken Page as the voice of Oogie Boogie with full orchestral accompaniment by The Royal Scottish National Orchestra in Glasgow and London Philharmonic Orchestra at The SSE Arena, Wembley.

Conductor John Mauceri, Founding Director of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, will be leading the full orchestra and choir performing the film’s classic score and songs live to picture.  The concert will also include featured violin soloist, Sandy Cameron.

Danny Elfman, who wrote the film’s songs (music and lyrics), composed its original score says, “Being able to perform “Nightmare” live in synch to the movie with a full orchestra was such a thrill at the sold out Hollywood Bowl shows.  Having Catherine O’Hara and Ken Page to perform with me really made it a unique and magical experience. I’m happy to bring this special night to the UK for the first time in December.”

First released in 1993, Tim Burton’s “The Nightmare Before Christmas” was directed by Henry Selick (“James and the Giant Peach”) and based on a story and characters by Tim Burton. The film follows the earnest-but-misguided adventures of Jack Skellington, Halloween Town’s beloved Pumpkin King, as he attempts to take over the Christmas holiday. Against the advice of Sally, a lonely rag doll who has feelings for him, Jack enlists three mischievous trick-or-treaters – Lock, Shock, and Barrel – to help him kidnap Santa Claus. Tim Burton’s fantastical tale was a box office smash which received rapturous reviews across the board has become a staple part of the extended holiday season.

The Nightmare Before Christmas Live in Concert, December 2019 follows 3 sold out nights at the prestigious Hollywood Bowl earlier this year and will be the second time this special concert event has left the USA.

NEWS: Cast announced for the revamped The Steamie at Glasgow’s SSE Hydro

A starry cast has been announced for Scotland’s much loved play, The Steamie. The revamped show – with more songs, more music and more laughs – will see The Dolls, Louise McCarthy and Gayle Telfer Stevens, marking their Steamie debut and playing the feisty Magrit and gullible Dolly respectively. Fiona Wood returns to the show for the third time to portrait the young, full of hope Doreen whilst Mary McCusker reprises the poignant role of Mrs Culfeathers. Harry Ward joins the cast as the lovable drunk handyman Andy.

Written and directed by Tony Roper with songs by David Anderson, this Hogmanay the show takes over Glasgow’s SSE Hydro, the largest entertainment venue in Scotland. Due to popular demand, an extra show on 28th December has been added to this special, limited run.

The Steamie is a Scottish theatre classic; an ode to the hard-working women of the 1950’s and to a bygone Glasgow. The young Doreen envisions a new future, while Mrs Culfeathers looks back to the past – the play is a snapshot of a society, of a time and a cross section of strong women, all rolled up in Roper’s hilarious comedy. As The Scotsman said in 2017, it is a “superb, funny and perfectly-observed play.”

This is the fourth time Neil Laidlaw has produced a tour of The Steamie, first in 2009, the 25th anniversary tour in 2012, the 30th anniversary tour in 2017 and now the revamped, steamier than ever special run at Glasgow’s SSE Hydro.

Neil Laidlaw said: “The Steamie is one of Scotland’s best-loved plays and I am extremely proud to be able to bring it back for another generation to enjoy, this time with new songs and a bigger cast and set.”

“We have brought together a fantastic cast: the inimitable Dolls – Louise McCarthy and Gayle Telfer Stevens who I know decided to be actors because of The Steamie – and Harry Ward are our newbies with the wonderful Fiona Wood and Mary McCusker reprising their roles of Doreen and Mrs Culfeathers. I can’t wait to get into the rehearsal room to witness another cast making this legendary play their own.”

Tony Roper said: “In my late forties I sat down with a biro and a jotter and wrote my first ever play. Over three decades later, the play is still getting the laughs and the cries, connecting with another generation of Scots. The Steamie is the nation’s favourite night out and I cannot wait to bring the show – with more music and a spectacular cast – to the country’s biggest entertainment venue, SSE Hydro.”
