A Play, A Pie and A Pint (PPP) has announced the cast of The Sheriff of Kalamaki by acclaimed Scottish playwright Douglas Maxwell.
The Sheriff of Kalamaki is the next highly anticipated PPP play by Douglas Maxwell, following audience favourite ‘Man’s Best Friend’ in 2022, which will star acting brothers Paul and Stephen McCole.
This new comedy-drama will transport theatregoers to Kalamaki, a tourist trap on Zante, where expat Dion (Paul McCole) has found his perfect job keeping an eye on troublesome Brits as ‘The Sheriff’. When his brother (Stephen McCole) from Scotland arrives looking for help, Dion may have to sacrifice his future and
return to a very different life.
Paul has starred in several of Douglas Maxwell’s shows, including National Theatre of Scotland’s musical
version of ‘Orphans’ by Peter Mullen which Maxwell did the book for. Stephen recently starred in ‘Anna Karenina’ at the Royal Lyceum Theatre Edinburgh and has featured in numerous television shows includingShetland, Vigil and Band of Brothers.
The Sheriff of Kalamaki will be directed by Jemima Levick, the Artistic Director, following acclaim for her direction at this year’s Edinburgh Festival Fringe for ‘SCOTS’ by Noisemaker at the Ghillie Dhu.
Douglas Maxwell said:
“This play has been a long time coming. My wife and I went to Zante way back in 2004 and I got talking to a bloke who said he was paid by the taverns to keep an eye on Brits abroad which I knew would be a fun character to write. What started as a comic premise has developed into the story of what we do as we get older and how to live a good life. Paul’s been in a couple of my shows, he’s fantastic, and I can’t wait to get to work with Stephen.”
Jemima Levick added:
“Douglas is one of PPP’s and Scottish theatre’s most treasured playwrights. He tackles familiar worlds with a laser sharp perspective and with heartwarming integrity which is no different in this play. We’re especially pleased that real-life brothers Paul and Stephen have agreed to come on board for this production. What a joy to have their sibling connection and shared life experience to lend to the characters.”
The Sheriff of Kalamaki will run at Oran Mor, Glasgow from 25-30 September 2023 and will go on tour and perform at Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh (5-7 October), The Gaiety, Ayr (12-14 October), and The Lemon Tree, Aberdeen (17-21 October)
