NEWS: Scottish Youth Theatre offer free places for children from low income families for half term programme

The October school holidays are just around the corner and what to do with the kids is always a constant challenge for parents and carers everywhere.

Scottish Youth Theatre is offering day long workshops in a variety of theatre skills from Mon 15 – Fri 19 October. Children aged 8 – 11 can learn all about puppetry, stage make-up, acting, movement and music. No experience is necessary and the classes will be led by theatre professionals who have years of experience working in the industry.

If cost is an issue then Scottish Youth Theatre encourage you to apply as their Creative Producer, Mahri Reilly adds

“We successfully applied for a grant from the Scottish Children’s Lottery earlier this year so we can open up our programme to even more children and young people in Scotland. We are delighted to allocate part of that bursary fund to our October Toolbox programme. So if you identify as being from a low income family or have a child with additional support needs – we encourage you to register. You can book one day, multiple days or the whole week.”

The workshops take place at Scottish Youth Theatre’s base at the Old Sheriff Court, Brunswick St in Glasgow and they run daily 10am – 5pm. At the end of each day, participants will share what they have learned with friends and family.

With regards to the bursary fund, Mahri elaborates,

“The fund is allocated across our whole artistic programme, so that financial barriers are never a barrier to opportunity or participation.  The bursary is open to young theatre makers in our National Ensemble and Making Space programme, to cover costs such as travel and accommodation during rehearsals and on tour, and will continue be available across future projects. We would like to thank The Scottish Children’s Lottery for enabling us to reach more children and young people across Scotland. Anyone interested in applying for bursaries should visit our website.”
