WHAT’S ON JUNE: Twenty Something at The Old Hairdressers
Sir Issac Newton has discovered gravity by the age of 23. Adele had 2 Grammys and a BRIT Award by 22. Steve Jobs founded Apple at 21. What have we done? Millennials are branded as lazy “snowflakes” who don’t want to move out of their parents’ house. Twenty-Something is an exploration of what that means and if it’s true that not buying avocados and take-away coffees really means we’ll be able to buy a house while bearing in mind that Vera Wang didn’t design her first dress until she was 41 so maybe the pressure isn’t as present as we think.
Pinched! Theatre Company and Bedroom Culture are excited to be collaborating together for the first time. Twenty-Something will be devised in the space of a week, directed by Phoebe Elliott, and star Tom White, Kirsten McPake, Emma Findlay, and Felix Adamson.
Bedroom Culture, founded in 2015 and headed by Phoebe Elliott, is a non-building based theatre company that aims to support emerging female theatre makers, directors, actors, playwrights, technicians, etc. Their first project was a 10 minute piece tackling the view towards women in the entertainment industry called [INSERT: FEMALE]. Their second piece was an installation called Teenage Dreams: After The Undertones and Katy Perry in which they built a bedroom from scratch which audience members could enter at any point to hear interviews from people who identified as girls during their teenage years. Twenty-Something will be their third project .
Pinched! Theatre Company was established in late 2014 by Kirsten McPake based between West Lothian and Glasgow. Their debut production Indie as Fuck, a piece of gig-theatre based around the short life of a crappy teenage band in early 2010, was performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2015 and 2017, with a devised piece The F Words being performed at the festival in 2016. Pinched! focuses on retelling the stories of the normal person through live music, movement and humour, particularly focusing on the voices of the Scottish youth.
