WHAT’S ON JUNE: Tron Theatre Co. with Blood of the Young presents PRIDE & PREJUDICE* (*sort of) by ISOBEL McARTHUR

Blood of the Young have certainly made their mark on the Scottish theatre scene, critically acclaimed for their first full-length, main stage production, Daphne Oram’s Wonderful World of Sound premiered as part of the Tron Theatre’s 2017 Mayfesto season and for shorter pieces, Secret Show 1 and Golden Arm Theatre Project.  Tron Theatre Company is working in partnership with them to present their summer comedy, Pride & Prejudice* (*sort of), an irreverent, all-female take on the classic Jane Austen novel.

Austen’s epic romance is packed with iconic moments and has captured the imagination of modern audiences the world over. Pride & Prejudice* (*sort of) will inevitably be watched by many people who are fans of the original, and in adapting the novel, writer Isobel McArthur wants to celebrate Austen’s humour, telling her story in a way that values its core message to the reader, albeit with karaoke and disco balls.

As Isobel says: ‘Not for the first time, my role is one of Writer-Performer. However, for this project, I’m also an Adapter. This novel means a great deal to a lot of people and I think it’s important to draw on Austen’s own humour and ingenuity first and foremost – rather than believing it can be bettered. Nevertheless, this can’t ever eclipse the more important task of creating something utterly un-stuffy that any audience, regardless of whether they’ve heard of Jane Austen or been to the theatre before, can enjoy as an uplifting and genuinely entertaining night out’.

Blood of the Young work collaboratively and have assembled a stellar company to present what promises to be a colourful and unique take on the most recognized of rom-coms. Taking on multiple roles alongside Isobel are Tori Burgess, Christina Gordon, Hannah Jarrett-Scott and Meghan Tyler, with Paul Brotherston directing, Ana Inés Jabares-Pita designing, lighting by Simon Hayes and sound design by MJ McCarthy.

Running time: approx.110 minutes (with a 20-minute interval).
