Weill said of Rice’s play, “It (is) a simple story of everyday life in a big city, a story of love and passion and greed and death. I saw great musical possibilities in its theatrical device – life in a tenement house between one evening and the next afternoon.” Street Scene is an ‘American opera’, providing a synthesis of European opera and American musical theatre. In the 1980s Scottish Opera premiered Street Scene in the UK, look forward to seeing it again on a Glasgow stage in May.
