NEWS: Citizens Theatre receives grant from Theatres Trust
The Citizens Theatre has received a grant from the Theatres Trust to carry out the first major clean of an historic part of its iconic auditorium in the Category B listed building’s 140-year history.
The building at 119 Gorbals Street now home to the Citizens Theatre was built in 1876 and opened as Her Majesty’s Theatre in 1878. While many of the original features of the building’s historically-significant Grade Category B listed auditorium have been preserved and restored, an enclosed dome area above the space has not been touched since the theatre first opened.
This summer, thanks to a generous grant from the Theatres Trust, a specialist cleaning team from Balmore Contracting Ltd. has been engaged to carry out the first extensive clean of the dome to remove 140 years’ worth of dust and debris. Highly experienced in cleaning historic and fragile spaces and difficult to access areas, Balmore have previously won contracts for specialist cleaning at Stirling Castle.
As a result of the cleaning, theatre staff and contractors will have easier access to the space, allowing any future maintenance work to be carried out quickly and effectively.
General Manager Lesley Davidson who is overseeing the project said, “I’m extremely grateful to the Theatres Trust for their support for this project. Our staff have worked closely with Balmore to ensure that the fabric of our building is cared for while this work has been carried out. I’m delighted that we’ve taken this step to care for our theatre’s heritage.”
Launched in April 2012, the Theatres Trust Small Grant Scheme makes awards to theatres across the UK that can clearly demonstrate the value capital improvements to their theatres would make to their work in local communities. Theatres Trust today announced six recipients of the tenth round of awards from its UK Theatres Small Grants Scheme, including the Citizens Theatre. The other recipients are Tobacco Factory Theatres, Bristol; Criterion Theatre, Coventry; Farnham Maltings; Acorn Theatre, Penzance; and The Bear Pit, Stratford-Upon-Avon.
The Citizens Theatre will soon begin a £19.5 million theatre redevelopment project, the first comprehensive redevelopment of the historic building, with work expected to begin in Summer 2018.
